The Washington office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP is seeking a D.C Pro Bono Counsel. This individual will primarily focus on our pro bono initiatives and will be a key member of our Firmwide Pro Bono team. This is an exempt staff position reporting to and supporting the Firmwide Director of Pro Bono, as well as providing support to the D.C. office program.
This individual will work closely with the Firm’s Director of Firmwide Pro Bono, the Washington, D.C. office Pro Bono Coordinator(s), members of the Firm’s Pro Bono Management Committee, and administrative staff in Washington, D.C. This role will spend approximately half time supporting the D.C. office pro bono program and half time supporting the Firmwide pro bono program. In D.C. the D.C. Pro Bono Counsel will assist in encouraging and motivating attorneys to undertake pro bono matters and play a key role in administering and further developing the pro bono program in D.C. The D.C. Pro Bono Counsel will liaise and develop relationships with pro bono referral agencies to create new referral opportunities. The D.C. Pro Bono Counsel will be responsible for performing a broad range of administrative duties in support of the D.C. office’s pro bono program. The D.C. Pro Bono Counsel will also support the Firmwide pro bono program as required.
Pro Bono Duties:
Develops and maintains relationships with outside public interest and legal aid organizations to develop referral opportunities.
Tracks attorneys’ pro bono interests, and recruits Firm attorneys and summer associates to accept pro bono work as appropriate.
Develops guidance documents and FAQs for different areas of pro bono practice.
Conducts statistical analyses of pro bono work as necessary.
Assists in responding to pro bono surveys and reports requested by various media outlets, bar associations and referral agencies.
Working with the Firmwide Director, develops philanthropic and administrative budgets for D.C. pro bono program, and monitors spend.
Coordinates pro bono awards program in D.C. office.
Monitors hours and supervisor involvement in pro bono matters; collects, maintains and reports pro bono data.
Attends conferences and meetings with other firms’ pro bono coordinators and pro bono interest groups, as necessary.
Assists with pro bono presentations.
Maintains pro bono information and data on peer firms for benchmarking purposes.
Assists public relations and marketing efforts to increase the reputation and visibility of the Firm’s pro bono work.
A Bachelor’s degree and J.D. are required, with a minimum of five years of relevant work experience in legal aid/public interest. The ideal candidate will have strong familiarity with the D.C. legal aid and public interest community, will be highly organized, possess excellent communication (oral and written) skills, the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, meet concrete deadlines, have a can-do attitude, and be a solid team player. The ability to perform analytical work with a high level of attention to detail and high standards for accuracy and quality are required. Maintaining positive relationships, both internally and externally, while maintaining a client service orientation and using sound independent judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential information are also required. Advanced familiarity with standard office technology applications such as Microsoft Office Suite is required, with particular emphasis on Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
