The Assistant Dean for Career Planning and Professional Development provides leadership, management, and direct student and alumni services in the area of career services. This position oversees efforts to support JD students and alumni in obtaining employment, which is a high priority for the law school. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, managing personnel; developing and managing a departmental budget; managing public relations/marketing/outreach to students, employers, and alumni; generating and providing reports on topics such as employment statistics and service usage; and providing comprehensive programming and direct services to law students and alumni.
Service to law students and alumni includes, among others, the following activities: • Providing guidance and counseling for students and alumni. • Serving as instructor of record in required, credit-bearing, first-year Professional Planning course designed to equip students with the skills necessary to engage in the practice of law. • Administering a variety of workshops and programs. • Providing library and web-based resources, including online job listings and newsletters for students. • Administering mentoring programs that match students with professionals. • Administering interview programs. • Administering alumni/student receptions in major cities in and outside of Oregon as appropriate.
The Assistant Dean is a participating member of the law school’s administrative team and will be expected to plan, develop, and implement law school projects, policies, and procedures. The person in this position will be expected to participate in the business and activities of the Oregon State Bar and various professional organizations.
The person in this position will be an energetic professional, whose leadership, creativity, vision, and interpersonal talents will enable her/him to articulate a positive, compelling vision for the office and its programs. It is vital that the person in this position be able to enlist others to help create that vision and to form alliances and work-groups of key law school constituents (including students, student groups, faculty, other administrators, and alumni) to carry out the functions of the Center for Career Planning and Professional Development.
This is a full-time position that reports to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs/Law School Dean of Students. Minimum Requirements • JD from an ABA accredited law school (or MBA or appropriate master’s degree). • 4 years of relevant professional experience (with preference for applicants with significant experience in legal or other relevant job markets).
Professional Competencies • Strong leadership skills and ability to conceive and execute a strategic vision for the Career Center. • Ability to work effectively with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds, including students of color, international students, non-traditional students and returning learners, and to foster sensitivity to and competency regarding diverse issues in a university community. • Outstanding written and oral communication skills and attention to detail. • Strong supervisory, organizational, and administrative skills. • Strong interpersonal skills sufficient to inspire and work effectively with diverse groups of students, faculty, alumni, members of the Bar, and legal employers. • Ability to travel as needed.
Preferred Qualifications • Demonstrated understanding of changing landscape of employment opportunities for law school students and graduates, particularly in the Pacific Northwest and especially in Oregon. • Demonstrated success in enhancing and expanding professional opportunities (including employment) for students and alumni. • Significant experience in legal or other relevant job markets.
