Bracewell LLP is currently seeking a Manager of Professional Development who will be responsible for managing the firm’s lawyer training and development programs, including orientation and integration, ongoing substantive training and skill development, associate and counsel performance evaluations, mentoring and career planning, and other professional development initiatives.
This firm-wide exempt position will report to the Chief Talent Officer and can be resident in the Houston, Dallas, New York or Washington, DC offices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Lawyer Training and Orientation: Manage the Firm training programs, including summer associate training, new associate and lateral orientation, departmental substantive skills training and professional skills training across the firm.
Work with Section and Department Heads and the Chief Talent Officer to assess substantive and skills learning needs and evaluate and improve training curriculum for all departments and levels.
Implement training curriculum, including planning and projecting needs for training events and interfacing with subject matter experts.
Work with subject matter experts to maximize the efficacy of their presentations, including guidance/assistance in revision of presentations and coaching on presentation skills.
Gather comments and suggestions from program evaluations and presenter comments and make recommendations for future programming.
Research and interface with external vendors to develop and provide lawyer training and development programs.
Facilitate the orientation and onboarding of entry-level associates, lateral associates and partners.
Manage firm-wide relationships with Practising Law Institute and other vendors and train lawyers on how to utilize these resources.
Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging developments relating to professional development in order to anticipate, plan, and make recommendations on improvements to the training and development programming.
Support and enhance the firm’s formal and informal mentoring programs.
Work on special department or firm projects, as needed.
Associate/Counsel Performance Evaluation Process:
Collaborate with the Human Resources Department to facilitate the evaluation process for all departments, including tracking and monitoring of evaluation report submissions and preparation and distribution of confidential review materials.
Interact with Section and Department Heads and other partners to assist with the evaluation process and provide updates and formal status reports.
Compile and analyze data from the evaluation process to inform training needs and other professional development initiatives.
Maintain expertise in CLE accreditation requirements to ensure that all, or most all, programs comply with CLE regulations in the relevant jurisdictions.
Manage the compliance of CLE requirements for internal and external training programs.
Handle the firm’s online CLE account and work with vendors to maximize the benefits provided.
Work collaboratively with the Marketing and Business Development department to ensure compliance and credit for client programs.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required; Juris Doctorate preferred.
Minimum of 6-8 years of professional development experience.
Excellent attention to detail, organizational, interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills.
Ability to take initiative and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Must possess superior judgment and be able to protect and maintain confidential and sensitive information.
Strong work ethic and teamwork skills.
Ability to travel to multiple office locations as necessary.
