The Director of Professional Development will report to the Managing Director of Talent Management and will focus on professional development. This is a global position that will assist across each office. Specific responsibilities below:
Work with firm management and Professional Development team to develop competencies for non-partners at the firm. Further develop and execute the firm’s career path program.
Manage the attorney review process and path to promotion program.
Write annual and semi-annual reviews for all attorneys at the firm, with a focus on potential principal and partner promotions.
Work with and partners, principals, counsels, and associates on the skills to actively participate in the feedback and review process.
Assist with the year-end compensation process.
Ensure onboarding and integration of lateral candidates and follow up as necessary.
Manage lateral partner and principal integration on an ongoing basis.
Schedule follow-up meetings with lateral hires and prepare materials for 90 days reviews.
Develop and monitor the firm’s mentorship program for attorneys at all levels.
Work with the Knowledge Management department and training to ensure that training programs are informed by attorney development needs, professional development meetings and mentor debriefings, and provide coaching, as needed.
Work with Knowledge Management and Staffing departments to develop and track attorney certifications in specific skills and knowledge.
Strategize and work with other departments to develop and execute on attorney retreats. Participate in attorney retreats.
Manage and continue to develop the firm’s coaching program. Participate and run coaching meetings with non-partners.
Manage the career counseling program for associates and counsel, including open placement of the firm’s lawyers with opportunities, both internally and externally, and the attorney outplacement programs.
Manage the exit process and conduct exit interviews of all attorneys and report on results and trends to.
Work to plan events to maintain and build morale and increase attorney engagement and satisfaction.
Collaborate with departments to suggest initiatives designed to enhance the day-to-day work environment of our attorneys.
Support the legal staffing team with staffing solutions for associates, principals and counsel to ensure appropriate legal and professional skill development.
Work with pro bono coordinator to ensure attorneys are working on matters that develop their skill sets.
Review utilization to ensure associates are fully utilized and flag potential issues. Participate in utilization meetings with partners as needed.
Assist with special projects as needed.
Bachelor’s Degree required
Minimum of five (5) years professional development experience
Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to present ideas comfortably and effectively
Exceptional writing, editing, creative problem solving and analytical skills
Strong organizational, project management, teamwork and leadership skills
Ability to be a proactive self-starter with close attention to detail and an ability to understand the importance of detailed work within a larger context
Ability to think “outside of the box”
Must be able to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues by using judgment that is consistent with the firm’s standards, practices, policies and procedures
Work independently, as well as be a team player in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment
