We are currently seeking a motivated professional to fill our Senior Practice Group Business Manager position, supporting the Intellectual Property Group.
This position will manage, implement and/or coordinate a variety of strategic and tactical support for selected firm practice groups as directed by the Sr. Director of Practice Management, ensuring well-coordinated day-to-day operations. The scope of responsibility encompasses a wide range of duties, including, but not limited to: Business Planning, Budgeting and Financial Management, development and management of alternative fee arrangements, Client Development and Professional Development. The Practice Group Business Manager will manage initiatives overseen by others as well as plan and develop the content for and participate in practice group conferences, retreats and meetings. This position will also conduct statistical analysis, and develop other proven management tools to research, analyze and improve the profitability and efficiencies of the firm practice groups to which assigned, elevating key issues to the Sr. Director of Practice Management and Practice Group Chairs. Such activities may also include performing financial analysis, identifying trends, assisting in attorney workload balancing and at all times exercising judgment to know what and when to escalate issues to the Sr. Director of Practice Management.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a superior level of understanding of assigned tasks and procedures and is expected to perform with limited guidance and supervision from the Sr. Director of Practice Management. Independent judgment and discretion are required. The Practice Group Business Manager must be able to prioritize and manage multiple complex operations or projects at one time, with continual attention to detail and accuracy with numbers. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required; proficient use of MS Office applications and statistical analysis is expected; must be adept in using the internet and standard databases as well as PowerPoint and sophisticated functions in Excel. Knowledge of law firm operations or familiarity with professional services environments is preferred. This position will also supervise practice operations manager and practice administrator.
Ideal candidates will be experts in law firm operations, legal accounting and finance, the elements of law firm profitability at the client and matter level as well as the attorney level, and will understand the challenges of local office operations. Must also have strong leadership and the ability to guide and mentor management-level staff. Requires a BA Degree or equivalent; a solid understanding of the business, finance, personnel, statistics and/or systems disciplines; and/or a minimum of 8 years of applicable experience. MBA or JD preferred. Experience with Intellectual Property legal practice strongly preferred.
