Reports to: Chief Talent Officer
The Director of Lateral Partner Recruitment & Integration will lead the firm’s lateral partner recruiting and integration efforts on a national basis. In collaboration with the firm’s Chief Talent Officer, Talent Management Committee, Practice Group and Department Leaders, and Office Managing Partners, he or she will develop and execute firm-wide and practice group-specific lateral partner recruiting and integration strategies for the Practice Groups, and will enable the continued positioning of Pepper Hamilton as the firm of choice for top tier legal talent. The successful candidate will be based in the firm’s Philadelphia, New York, Boston, or Washington, DC office.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide leadership and vision in the development of lateral partner recruiting strategies, working closely with the Chief Talent Officer, Talent Management Committee, Practice Group and Department Leaders to identify and ascertain future needs based upon the firm’s strategic business goals and growth objectives;
Develop and maintain strong and collaborative relationships with Leaders of the Practice Groups and Departments and Office Managing Partners, developing an understanding of the respective practices and sub-practices, skills needs and gaps, place in market, and strategic plans for growth, and sharing market intelligence about the firm and the Practice Group/Department;
Develop strong relationships with firm partners to engage them in the lateral partner recruiting process and leverage their knowledge of the marketplace and relationships with potential target candidates;
Develop and maintain strong relationships with legal search consultants and search firms, leveraging their market intelligence for the benefit of the firm, review and negotiate fee proposals and service agreements, and engage those resources in the identification, evaluation, and acquisition of lateral partner candidates;
Drive the end-to-end recruiting process (including the development of financial “business cases” for potential lateral partner candidates) through the offer, onboarding, and integration phases, and provide guidance, counsel, and regular updates to other key senior stakeholders; formulate and administer policies, operational procedures, and practices consistent with the business goals and growth objectives of the firm;
Develop and implement successful integration programs, processes, and best practices to ensure that new partners are effectively and fully integrated, and appropriately supported, within the firm’s structure;
Evaluate, develop and implement tools for measuring the success of recruitment and integration efforts within the firm and across regions and practice groups; regularly report on successes and areas for improvement, including the subsequent performance of lateral partners;
Monitor current trends and innovations in recruiting strategies and practices, develop corresponding responses, and implement new methodologies, programs, and practices as appropriate;
Maintain clear, effective lines of communication, keeping all stakeholders well-informed regarding candidates, new initiatives and developments, business issues, and other critical topics;
Actively serve as a champion and key external representative for the firm; participate in recruiting and general legal networking opportunities including speaking and authoring articles for industry events and publications;
Participate in building and fostering a culture that is team- and one-firm-oriented, collegial, and committed to professional excellence.
Minimum Qualifications and Skills
Extensive experience leading all aspects of the senior executive (partner-equivalent) recruitment process, including identification of needs, strategy development, management of external search consultants and firms, development of financial “business cases,” candidate evaluation and assessment, offer negotiation, and onboarding and integration;
Established relationships with legal recruiters in Philadelphia and other cities in which the firm has offices;
Demonstrated ability to recruit nationally while understanding nuances of local markets.
Demonstrated strategic leadership experience within a growing, client-focused environment and proven ability to develop comprehensive short-term and long-term operational plans from broadly stated business objectives;
Outstanding relationship-building skills and personable approach, combined with poise, gravitas, and the ability to lead through influence rather than control – creating consensus-based support for business strategies and decisions;
Strong business acumen and analytical skills; the ability to develop comprehensive short-term and long-term operational plans from broadly stated objectives, in a dynamic, global environment;
Expert understanding of best practices in senior executive talent acquisition, including the design and utilization of reporting tools and metrics, and other measurements of effectiveness;
A consultative, collaborative, and client service-oriented approach;
High level of responsiveness
Ability to juggle multiple priorities, make decisions, and pivot quickly as needed
Superior presentation, writing, and verbal communication skills.
Related Training and Education Required
A minimum of 10 years of broad-based, executive talent acquisition leadership experience with major national law firms, financial services firms, professional services firms, or other similarly sophisticated institutions. Law firm partner recruiting experience highly preferred. An undergraduate degree is required, advanced degrees preferred.
