The Practice Support Services Department of Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP has an opening for a Legal Assistant in the San Francisco office. The Legal Assistant is responsible for assisting the patent prosecution team. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Preparation of Information Disclosure Statements for submission to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in compliance with the duty of disclosure requirements of 37 C.F.R. 1.56. This entails creation, organization, and maintenance of large databases, often including hundreds of documents, to ensure that (i) all information that is material to patentability and known to any individual associated with the filing and prosecution of a patent application is submitted to the USPTO in the form of Information Disclosure Statements (IDS); and (ii) such documents are cross-cited in all related patent applications.
Preparation and maintenance of Information Disclosure Statements, and regular periodic status updates on parallel applications and other related information for submission to patent offices in foreign jurisdictions.
Attend to registration of assignments, name and address changes for clients before the USPTO and foreign patent offices and regulatory agencies. This entails complying with complex formalities requirements in various foreign jurisdictions, including obtaining supporting documentation from clients, notarization and legalization of required documents, and coordination of the registration process with foreign associates.
Attend to registration of Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs) on behalf of clients, working with the responsible attorneys and foreign associates. This entails complying with complex formalities requirements in various foreign jurisdictions, including obtaining supporting documentation from clients, notarization and legalization of required documents, and coordination of the registration process with foreign associates.
Perform second review of documents prior to filing with USPTO, as needed.
Assist with USPTO filings, as needed.
Minimum of three years of experience in a relevant field, with demonstrated attention to detail and experience with handling and organizing large volumes of documents.
Knowledge, experience, and understanding of USPTO rules, procedures and formal requirements.
Excellent written and oral communication and inter-personal skills.
Strong proficiency in Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Excellent administrative and organizational skills.
Ability to effectively coordinate collection of information and data from multiple sources.
Ability to handle a number of responsibilities simultaneously.
Ability to manage time and prioritize workload effectively.
Flexibility to work additional hours, as necessary.
