The Director of Learning and Development is responsible for developing and executing the strategy of Attorney professional development in support of the Firm’s overall strategic direction. Reporting to the Chief Talent Officer, the Director of Learning and Development will have responsibility for all aspects of the firm’s formal and informal training and development initiatives.
Working closely with Practice Leaders and the Chief Talent Officer, the Director of Learning and Development is responsible for creating and implementing comprehensive legal and professional skills curricula, aligned with the Winston Attorney Development Framework and the unique needs of each practice and client team. This individual will partner with Practice Leaders to proactively determine learning needs and develop or source solutions for those needs. This role is responsible for CLE compliance and programming, including overseeing the management of delivery of all CLE programs across the firm through online resources, live programs, and videoconferencing.
This role also is responsible for creating an integrative approach to attorney development including developing an enhanced culture of coaching and mentoring. The person in the role will collaborate with the Director of Coaching to ensure that all learning and development activities and programs are integrated. He/she will also collaborate with the Human Resources Department. Lead for professional staff training to ensure alignment between the staff and attorney learning paths and opportunities.
The Director of Learning and Development is a member of the Talent leadership team and will work under the direction of the Chief Talent Officer, collaborating with Attorney Recruiting, Coaching, Human Resources and Diversity leadership to ensure alignment and efficient use of talent and resources devoted to talent initiatives.
Using sound judgment and strategic leadership, this individual in this role will motivate and lead the Learning and Development team to successfully provide attorney resources for the Firm. This position will prepare and oversee all aspects of the budget for Learning and Development. The Director of Learning and Development is a strategic leader who exercises a high level of professionalism and discretion while ensuring excellent client service and satisfaction in all areas
Oversees all aspects of attorney professional development for the firm.
Collaborates with the Manager of Internal Communication to create and execute a strategic professional development communication plan to share professional development information.
Collaborates with Attorney Recruiting and Development to ensure that onboarding, orientation, and mentoring efforts are aligned with the firm’s learning and development strategy.
Develops, enhances and implements legal professional development training programs to support attorney development.
Produces reporting and analytics to inform Practice leadership on trends related to attorney demographics, retention statistics, and performance.
Facilitates and fosters effective attorney talent communications to the firm and communications between administrative departments.
Provides leadership in the development and implementation of attorney talent resources.
Manage the delivery of all CLE programs in the office through online resources, live programs and videoconferencing. Handle CLE accreditation of programs and allocation and tracking of credits, along with any state reporting requirements; coordinate participation of lawyers in training opportunities and market the options; coordinate pro bono events and efforts.
Supports the firm's Diversity and Inclusion efforts and encourages inclusion by championing and partnering to implement initiatives and events.
Partners with Human Resources leadership to drive professional staff and engagement efforts.
Proactively consults with Human Resources leadership on employee relations matters for thoughtful and efficient resolution.
Participates in firm wide projects as needed.
Prepares the budget for professional development and manage the expenses to the budget.
Must be specifically listed on resume in order to be considered for this position:
A minimum of ten years of progressive law firm experience in the area of attorney professional development required.
Strong client service focus with the ability to navigate complex, matrixed organizations.
Ability to establish credibility and build strong relationships at all levels of the firm across practices and geographies.
Demonstrated track record of successfully managing, leading, and mentoring a team.
Strong writing and verbal communication and excellent presentation skills. Ability to effectively tailor communications for different stakeholders.
