Job Summary: The Director of Career Services for the School of Law develops, manages, and implements the strategy for the law school’s Office of Career Services resulting in strong employment outcomes for students and alumni. The Director fosters a culture of collaboration across the law school, emphasizing the responsibility all faculty and staff have in supporting students in their efforts to become ethical, hard-working, practice ready attorneys with compelling professional opportunities available to them. Together with their team, the Director champions USF School of Law students and alumni to match them with potential employers. The Director also works closely with students and alumni to prepare them for interviews and professional opportunities.
The Director fosters, promotes and maintains both alumni and non-alumni employer connections with the School of Law, which, in part, results in employment for our students, recent graduates, and alumni. The Director is responsible for all aspects of USF School of Law’s Career Services offerings including: one-on-one student meetings, sourcing student and recent graduate job opportunities, managing on campus recruiting, resume and cover letter review, mock interviews, connecting students with alumni mentors and other contacts, developing and managing networking events, and representing USF School of Law to the legal community by participating in events and various bar associations including the American Bar Association (ABA). The Director reports to the Assistant Dean, Development & External Relations.
Full Job Description:
Responsible for developing, managing, implementing and evaluating an annual Career Services Strategy and associated tactics in support of the School of Law’s vision and priorities, which include a commitment to diversity and inclusion. The Director oversees career services programming including, but not limited to: career counseling for current law students and alumni, on campus recruitment, legal employer outreach and engagement, and professional development services.
The Director leads and manages proactive and responsive career services professionals, including a team of 3-4 staff members and several student assistants. It is the Director’s responsibility to create and maintain a positive, professional, and collaborative working environment, leading through example, and providing staff development and mentorship. The Director establishes performance measures, monitors results, and works with the Assistant Dean, Development and External Relations to evaluate the effectiveness of the Career Services Office.
The Director is the primary point of contact between USF School of Law and external stakeholders who can fulfill student and alumni employment needs. The Director manages a portfolio of attorneys and employers who regularly hire our students and alumni, as well as a portfolio of students including McAuliffe Honor Society students and diverse students.
The Director is responsible for connecting current students with alumni for networking and professional development opportunities as part of the law school’s comprehensive effort to further the career placement opportunities for USF School of Law students and alumni, with a strong emphasis on supporting current students. The Director spends a significant portion of their time building relationships with alumni and non-alumni hiring managers and other decision makers at law firms, companies, government and non-government agencies, and other legal employers who recruit, interview, and hire USF School of Law students and alumni to measurably increase employment opportunities for our students, recent graduates, and alumni.
The Director manages the alumni mentor program, employment-related data collection, including at special events such as the School’s swearing in ceremonies, and a comprehensive portfolio of career-related events and programs.
The Director develops, implements and manages new initiatives and programs that support student employment through internships, clerkships, externships, and permanent placements, and works with the Externship Office to identify externship opportunities for current students. They also serve as the primary point of contact between career services and the faculty (in partnership with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs) to provide information and answer questions regarding employment of students and recent graduates.
The Director is responsible for keeping informed of changes in the legal market and implementing changes, new activities, and programs to ensure USF law students have access to the best and most compelling job opportunities possible. The Director represents USF School of Law in leadership roles with organizations including Bay Area Legal Recruitment Association (BALRA), National Association of Law Placement (NALP), and local, state, and national bar association career-related events and programs.
The Director develops, implements and manages career-focused communications on the USF School of Law website, social media channels, and through other channels including the Office of Career Services newsletter. Working in close collaboration with career services staff, the Director also ensures the integrity of the office’s various web and software-based applications and databases including Salesforce and Symplicity.
The Director is responsible for preparing survey instruments and overseeing the collection, tracking, and maintenance of all statistical information on graduate recruiting and employment for use in strategic planning and to fulfill internal and external reporting requirements.
The Director is responsible for budget oversight and careful stewardship of the office’s allocated budget, and is responsible for other duties as assigned.
Minimal qualifications consist of any combination equivalent to a B.A. with four years of responsible office work, including significant counseling experience in either a law school career services office or the attorney recruitment department of a law firm/legal employer. Strong preference for candidates with a J.D. and two (2) years experience in the practice of law, or an M.A. in counseling and two (2) years experience in the career counseling field.
The Director must have a proven track record of excellent leadership, interpersonal, administrative, supervisory and collaborative skills, as well as exceptional written and oral communication skills.
They should be a problem-solver with the capacity to be innovative and creative in the pursuit of the School of Law’s strategic goals. The Director must have an understanding of the current challenges in the legal market, with particular appreciation of the career development issues affecting law students and recent graduates, and be able to identify and analyze trends in the legal profession.
The Director should have an understanding of law school operations and a solid knowledge of the many facets of the legal community including bar associations, major companies, law firms of all sizes, significant non-profit and public interest organizations, and key governmental entities.
The Director must be comfortable with technology and have an understanding of and facility with software and database programs, social media platforms, and online resources, and a willingness to respond to the needs of a diverse group of students, alumni, and employers in an increasingly technology-oriented society.

Knowledge of the landscape of the legal community in Northern California and beyond, including bar associations, private firms, corporations, and non-profit and public interest organizations, and government entities.
