The Manager of Attorney Recruitment and Development will oversee all associate recruiting and attorney development for the Bay Area, which includes both the San Francisco and Silicon Valley offices. As the Manager, you will use your experience and understanding of the legal and competitive market landscape to strategically plan and implement the goals and objectives of the offices and departments. The Manager would spend time in both offices (on a regular week this would include at least two days in each office). The Manager is involved with strategic planning for associate-related matters, and helps the Associates Committee and Recruiting Committee achieve its goals and objectives, with a particular focus on the recruiting, hiring, staffing, retention, development, public service, and diversity goals of the firm.
The Manager will be responsible for the orientation, integration, career development, training and work assignments for new and lateral associates. The Manager also provides support for the evaluation and promotion processes performed by the Associates Committee. In addition, the Manager is a member of the Global Attorney Development team and as such, may assist with, coordinate or lead global projects or support efforts, while accomplishing these and other critical functions:
Leading the Recruiting and Attorney Development staff in their professional development endeavors.
Supporting the strategic initiatives of the Associates and Recruiting Committees, including suggesting and implementing programs and initiatives related to associate recruiting, hiring, morale and retention.
Developing and maintaining relationships with San Francisco and Silicon Valley Office Managing Partners, Local Department Chairs, Global Recruiting Managers and other local Recruiting Committee members regarding the ongoing hiring needs of the Bay Area offices.
Keeping the Recruiting and Associates Committees informed about global recruiting and development strategies.
Leading and assisting with extensive on-campus recruiting programs and early recruiting programs and events. Managing attorney new hire orientation schedules.
Coordinating the orientation of new attorneys, including fall associate class onboarding.
Developing and maintaining relationships with local Associates Committee members, Office Managing Partners, Local Department Chairs, Practice Group Chairs as well as the Global Attorney Development Department regarding the ongoing associate development needs of the offices. Meeting regularly with these groups to discuss ongoing needs and issues.
Managing work assignments for unassigned associates and summer associates. This responsibility involves frequent contact with unassigned associates; regular contact with partners, counsel and assigned associates; maintaining data and reports to track book assignments and associate pace; reviewing weekly work reports from unassigned associates; working with the Associates Committee regularly on staffing; maintaining department roster; and monitoring pace.
Providing research, analyzing data, and generating reports as requested by the local Associates Committee, Director Global Attorney Development, Office Managing Partners, Directors of Administration, and others.
Coordinating TACE and other educational programs in the offices and managing the set-up of all classes offered through the TACE Committee and various local practice groups.
Overseeing local efforts in support of diversity including working with the Multicultural Progression and Attainment Coalition (MPAC), the Women Enriching Business (WEB) initiative, the Diversity Leadership Committee (DLC) and the lawyer affinity groups.
Working with the Pro Bono Committee to staff pro bono assignments.
Developing budgets and monitoring expenses for certain attorney-related accounts, including outreach and recruiting efforts.
Managing the attorney mentor program with the Mentoring Committee.
Strategizing, organizing, and executing all details related to attorney events, such as retreats, department dinners, partner/associate dinners and all other morale building event activities.
Traveling occasionally to firm wide all-attorney or administrative management meetings.
As a Manager of Attorney Recruitment and Development, you will be expected to apply your organizational and communication skills while displaying a positive, high-energy attitude. The successful Manager of Attorney Recruitment and Development should possess knowledge of legal employment issues, excellent leadership skills necessary for effective management, organizational skills needed to manage time well, prioritize effectively, and handle multiple deadlines, excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and well-developed and professional interpersonal skills. The Manager should have the ability to interact effectively with people at all organizational levels of the Firm, the ability to develop and maintain professional and effective working relationships with clients, consultants and other representatives of external organizations. They should be sensitive towards the needs of diverse and multicultural constituencies. The Manager should participate actively in professional organizations, including the National Association for Law Placement (NALP), city groups and other appropriate legal associations.
A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in related field required. A Master’s degree or equivalent in related field, MBA or JD also strongly preferred. Four (4) to six (6) years management experience desired.
