Diversity Management, Professional Legal Management
Reporting to the Managing Partner, the role of the Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer (CDEIO) is to provide strategic, programmatic and operational leadership for initiatives that advance diversity, equity and inclusion as core values of the Firm. The CDEIO will be responsible for working with Firm Management, Section Leadership and Firm Committees to advance such initiatives and leverage best practices and resources across the Firm to promote a culture of equity and inclusion. This role will focus on creating and implementing diversity, equity and inclusion trainings and programming, developing and executing diversity hiring and retention goals and policies and coordinating the Firm's internal and external efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal community and in the local communities where our attorneys work and live.
Provide thought leadership and subject matter expertise on diversity, equity and inclusion best practices.
Implement and manage the Firm’s diversity, equity and inclusion programs and initiatives in collaboration with DIN, HBWIN, Human Resources and Attorney Recruiting.
Coordinate internal Firm diversity mentoring initiatives and training in collaboration with the DIN and the Director of Professional Development.
Coordinate various other internal Firm events and efforts (e.g., cultural holidays, cultural awareness events, online education, etc.).
Coordinate external events and efforts (CMCP, LCLD, minority bar associations, law school affinity groups, etc.) to develop and foster relationships the legal community and with local law schools.
Build strategic relationships with diversity and inclusion oriented professional organizations; serve as the Firm's representative to professional and community organizations.
Collaborate with Partners to formulate strategy for working with clients, professional and trade organizations and other external parties on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives; coordinate and manage externally focused programs.
Partner with hiring and recruiting committees, Firm Management and Section Leaders to develop diversity hiring and retention goals, strategic initiatives, as well as monitor progress and report on results.
Generate and distribute internal diversity, equity and inclusion communications; guide general communication within the Firm in a manner consistent with the Firm's culture of valuing diversity and inclusion; work with Marketing to generate and distribute external communications related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Serve as editor for the DIN newsletter.
Respond to various industry surveys, RFPs and client questionnaires related to diversity and inclusion.
Develop a diversity and inclusion budget and manage the budget throughout the year.
Monitor key internal diversity and inclusion metrics and statistics; analyze and report meaningful data and progress to Firm Management and relevant Firm Committees.
Maintain current diversity information on website and HUB; update and maintain diversity brochure materials.
Stay informed on diversity awards, programs and opportunities for marketing; prepare and submit applications to the same.
Attend various diversity, equity and inclusion conferences and meetings to stay informed on current best practices; share and implement information learned at the Firm
Bachelor’s Degree required; Bachelor's Degree or advanced degree in ethnic studies a plus.
Knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion principles, best practices, industry trends and resources.
A minimum of three years’ related experience in a law firm or in the legal industry preferred.
A minimum of three years' experience with coordinating and implementing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives for an employer.
Strong track record in managing change, with an understanding of the contexts, cultures and politics within institutions that impact the implementation of effective diversity change efforts.
Strong and persuasive oral and written communication skills, with experience in multiple communication modes (including social media), with the ability to effectively articulate the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in the Firm's mission.
Ability to collaborate with and influence direction with diverse stakeholders; excellent listening and facilitation skills.
A passion and interest in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
Demonstrated cultural awareness and agility; ability to build trust and credibility with internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to work both independently and with teams.
Ability to build strong and effective relationships with Partners, Attorneys and Staff, Firm Committees and external stakeholders.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion and handle sensitive and confidential matters appropriately.
Keen eye for detail; strong analytical and quantitative abilities.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
