Established in 1865, the George Washington University Law School is the oldest law school in the nation’s capital and one of the most prestigious law schools in the country. The Law School is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a charter member of the Association of American Law Schools. GW Law is located on the GW campus in the downtown DC neighborhood familiarly known as Foggy Bottom. This position assists with the overall administration, organization, and supervision of the office to enhance the career development and post-graduate employment of students and alumni. The position will focus on counseling recent graduates and JD alumni on all aspects of their career development by identifying their interests and areas of strengths and providing the professional development resources to assist them in achieving their career goals in the legal sector. Representative Responsibilities: •Oversees the delivery of career advising to ensure that students and alumni are provided with the tools, resources, and guidance necessary to enable them to secure fulfilling legal employment and advance their careers in the legal profession. •Provides training and support for career counselors, including on-boarding, counseling methodology, strategies, and practice specific approaches. •Counsels students and alumni in determining career goals and objectives through self-evaluation; assesses articulated career interests and recommends avenues of exploration to meet goals. Advises and counsels students and alumni on matters related to career and professional development and the legal job search process. Refers students and alumni to mentors and other professional contacts. •Provides coaching/counseling; planning and assessment and conducts mock interviews; provides guidance/mentorship to alumni seeking legal professional development. •Builds relationships with alumni for networking, mentoring, informational interviews, job leads, and other support for students, recent graduates, and other alumni. Establishes and manages Alumni Career Advisory groups by student practice area interest. Identifies range of professional development opportunities by practice area, such as pro bono, journals and competitions, externships, clinics, and targeted summer jobs. •Serves as an advisor in the Inns of Court program and assists with program coordination and delivery of program content. •Develops events and programs on a variety of legal and alternative career topics, both independently and in conjunction with alumni and student groups. Regularly reviews program content for effectiveness and alignment with job search and career needs. •Maintains positive relationships with employers, alumni, students, staff, and faculty. Collaborates on Student Bar Association initiatives and submits SBA newsletter content. •As required, represents the Career Center at national, regional, and local meetings of appropriate professional organizations and associations, and periodically interfaces with law career counselors at other law schools. Assists with the programming, coordination, and delivery during all phases of networking fairs, job fairs, recruitment programs, and other career development programs, which may include travel. •The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC.
