Position Summary: The Director of Academic Success will build and implement the full range of programming to assist students in developing the skills that they need to succeed in law school and their professional lives. The Director of Academic Success is part of the Office of Student Services and reports to the Dean of Students.
Position Responsibilities: Specific responsibilities include: - Developing and implementing academic success programming, potentially to include:
- Programs for all students that address class preparation, time management, case synthesis, outlining, and exam writing skills
- Materials and resources on the skills and information needed for success in law school (e.g. print handouts, video tutorials, and website updates and class announcements)
- Counseling students in need of academic support and managing school-wide academic counseling resources, including:
- Assessing, triaging, and responding to student requests for academic support
- Meeting one-on-one with students subject to academic guidance and others seeking assistance
- Evaluating the need for additional counseling, tutoring, or support resources and implementing and managing appropriate systems
- Building and teaching in the academic and bar support curriculum, including:
- Teaching in at least one of our existing intervention courses in academic success and bar support
- Evaluating existing offerings and, if appropriate, developing new and innovative intervention courses
- Assisting with administration of intervention and bar support courses
In support of the responsibilities described above, the Director will: - Collect, maintain, and analyze data related to the efficacy of academic success initiatives
- Collaborate with stakeholders throughout the Cardozo community, including student groups, administrators, and faculty to increase student participation in academic success programming, assess the efficacy of academic success efforts, and introduce initiatives to promote better learning outcomes, including bar success
- Assist with advising students on course selection, graduation requirements, and general support alongside colleagues in the Office of Student Services, including the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of Student Life
Experience & Educational Background: - J.D. degree from an A.B.A. approved law school; strong law school credentials; bar admission to a state
- Ideal candidates will have experience working in a higher education setting in the areas of academic assistance, academic counseling or similar administrative, teaching, or practice experience
Skills & Competencies: - Possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and an interest in and ability to build meaningful learning relationships with students
- Foster, encourage, and facilitate open communication and an atmosphere of open expression and possess an understanding of the academic engagement challenges of the current generation of law students
- Possess exceptionally strong legal writing skills
- Be skilled in data collection, data management and basic statistics
- Continually search for ways to increase satisfaction of faculty, students, staff, and other constituents
- Possess demonstrated leadership, management, and administrative skills
- Possess demonstrated ability to devise, coordinate, and implement innovative programming
