This position can be based in our Downtown Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC, or San Francisco office. There is only one opening.
We are seeking a Director of Legal Recruiting to join one of our U.S. offices. As a member of the Sheppard Mullin’s Talent Management Leadership Team, the Director of Legal Recruiting will support the Firm and our strategy and management to all aspects of the entry-level recruiting process (including on-campus recruiting and the summer associate program) and lateral attorney (associates and special counsel) recruiting and integration. Additional responsibilities include collaborating with Talent Management and Human Resources Directors on goals related to all aspects of Talent Development.

The candidate will be responsible for leading recruiting strategy and hiring processes for all associate, special counsel, staff attorney and patent agent hiring across all US offices. The Director is responsible for leading a team responsible for legal recruiting strategies that align with the firm’s growth and business goals to hire and integrate top legal talent.
Essential Functions: Lateral Attorney Hiring: • Provide oversight and guidance to the recruitment processes to source qualified candidates and implement strategies that increase the firm’s capability to attract, assess, select, and integrate talent. • Work with senior recruiting manager, senior leadership team, including practice management to review utilization and provide approvals for new searches. • Provide oversight to templates for offer letters, search firm agreements.
Entry Level and Law Student Hiring: • Provide strategy and direction for law student and entry-level recruiting. • Review and direct firmwide hiring projections, strategic outreach, communications and relationships with targeted law schools. • Build and maintain strong relationships with law school career services at target law schools; plan strategic outreach and communication efforts; maintain hiring statistics, projections, and analyze trends; provide advice to hiring committees regarding recruitment initiatives.
Summer Associate Program: • Manage the process of designing and overseeing the firm’s summer program, including work assignments, evaluations/offer decisions, training and development, in coordination with the members of the professional development team.
Integration: • Collaborate with Firm functions such as Office of the General Counsel, IT, Practice Management, Professional Development, D&I, and HR team members on strategic initiatives related to lateral recruiting and integration of attorneys; • In collaboration with Professional Development Team members, structure and execute firmwide First Year and Summer Associate Academies and lateral attorney orientation and integration.
Diversity and Inclusion: • Serve as an active member and recruiting representative to the D&I committee; • Collaborate closely with the Director of D&I and Talent Management Strategy to ensure candidate assessment and hiring practices align with D&I goals; • Lead the recruiting team’s role in Mansfield certification process; develop and maintain new initiatives to diversify candidate pool at all levels, including the 1L LCLD program and developing strategy to diversify lateral pipeline.
General Responsibilities: • Consult with the Office of General Counsel regarding all employment, personnel, and other risk-management issues as necessary. • Represent the firm within the legal recruiting industry, assess and report on market trends, recruiting opportunities, and firm recruiting performance. • Implement, own, and leverage the firm’s legal recruiting systems to streamline processes and enhance reporting. • Manage the operational budget for the department. • Provide annual review of recruiting and integration data and themes.
Supervisory Responsibilities: The Director is responsible for leading the team of Recruiting managers, supervisors and coordinators. The Director will work closely with the TM/HR Senior Leadership Team and directly with the CHRO.
10+ Years of Recruiting Experience with a professional services firm
Areas of expertise beneficial to success in this role include strategic planning, team development, consensus building, risk management and compliance, performance management, budget development and oversight, presentations and meeting facilitation, change management, on-boarding, process improvement, systems design and implementation, and project management.
Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills; executive presence and sound judgment to communicate effectively and gain credibility with internal and external audiences.
Travel Requirements Up to 50% travel. Travel to each U.S. office at least twice per year.
