The USC Gould School of Law seeks applications for Associate Dean of Career Services. The Career Services Office (CSO) is committed to providing students and graduates with the skills and information necessary to find rewarding employment in a wide array of settings including opportunities in the private and public sectors, for judicial clerkships as well as alternatives to legal practice. The CSO provides comprehensive, integrated service that is tailored to the individual student or graduate. The successful candidate will be flexible, highly motivated, proactive, team oriented and will enjoy working closely with students, graduates, faculty, staff, and employers.
Reporting to the Dean of the law school, the Associate Dean of Career Services will manage the operations of the office (currently 7 full-time staff).The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker, educator, influencer, and collaborator, who is community minded, recognizes the talent in each student/graduate, and enjoys leading a highly accomplished and diverse team.
Specific responsibilities include: Administering and coordinating all career services; managing staff; overseeing and implementing all career programming and activities; providing individual counseling to students and graduates; working closely with and cultivating employment opportunities for students/graduates with public and private sector employers locally, regionally and nationally; overseeing and managing the employment outcomes reporting process to the American Bar Association (ABA), the National Association for Law Placement (NALP), and U.S. News and World Report (USNWR) among other entities; representing Gould and participating with NALP and other professional associations. The individual in this position will work closely with other law school departments and committees including: the Board of Councilors CSO committee, faculty clerkship committee, development and alumni relations department, student services, registrar, admissions, communications, student success, budget, externships, and the faculty.
Requirements for the position include: 8+ years’ experience and responsibility in a law school career services office, or other comparable experience; strong counseling skills; extensive staff management experience; proven organizational and leadership skills; a collaborative working style; excellent judgment; ability to interact professionally with all constituents including students, staff, faculty, employers, judges and alumni; ability to work with and supervise data collection and analysis; ability to communicate and represent the law school effectively in writing, in-group presentations, on the telephone and via other technologies, and in face-to-face individual meetings; outstanding oral and written communications skills; proven ability to manage an office, which works within time-pressured deadlines, frequent interruptions and changing priorities. Develop, promote and deliver seminars, in person and online, to students and alumni on strategic career management, professional networking, self-marketing, career advancement, resume-writing, interviewing, job search, and other career planning and professional development topics.

The preferred education is a Juris Doctor degree. Qualifications may also include one or more of the following: BA, Master’s, or Doctorate degree accompanied by 10+ years’ experience successfully leading a Career Service Office at a law school.
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree Minimum Experience: 10 years Minimum Field of Expertise: Bachelor’s degree in counseling, higher education, human resources, or related fields. Ten years’ experience in corporate and/or higher education institutions, with supervisory/managerial experience. Excellent leadership and guidance skills, with demonstrated ability to manage, balance, and prioritize different tasks and projects. In-depth knowledge of federal immigration regulations, interpreting and providing guidance as to their pertinence to international students. Advanced knowledge of employer recruiting strategies, job market trends, and occupational, career, and employment information sources. Mastery of Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite software. Demonstrated experience with office management communication software and tools (e.g., Google suite, Slack, Skype) and social media management. Demonstrated experience managing multi-platform communications and marketing plans involving publications, videos, websites, social media, and public speeches and presentations. Superior level of professionalism, exceptional attention to detail, and exemplary communication (oral and written), presentation, and public-speaking skills. Proven business savvy, interpersonal skills, and ability to deliver quality services, and passion as it relates to impact on outcomes. Demonstrated experience interacting with a diverse individuals and groups, exercising diplomacy, good judgment, and discretion.
