Associate Dean for Careers - Georgetown University Law Center
The Associate Dean for Careers provides the strategic vision for and oversight of the three Georgetown Law career offices that support nearly 2700 Law Students [and alumni] in securing post-graduate employment:
Office of Career Strategy (OCS, focused on private sector opportunities for JD students)
Office of Public Interest and Community Service (OPICS, focused on public and non-profit sector opportunities for JD students)
Office of Graduate Careers (OGC, focused on all career opportunities for LLM students)
The Associate Dean for Careers works to maximize the employment opportunities for and placement of law students in jobs, while assisting each office in strengthening diversity, equity and inclusion; professional development; and career planning initiatives; and oversees annual reporting of employment data collection and leads external advocacy efforts with ABA, US News & World Report, and other reporting entities.
Reporting directly to the Dean and Executive Vice President, and directly supervising 3 Assistant Deans in designing strategies and programs that connect law students with public and private-sector employment opportunities, the Associate Dean for Careers has responsibilities that include but are not limited to:
Strategic Planning and Analysis
Conduct analysis of career offices to ensure each team has the resources needed to serve student populations, in line with the distinct staffing needs of each office.
Conduct long-range planning for career offices, including SWOT analysis, growth projections, anticipated needs, and succession planning.
Work with Assistant Deans of career offices to evaluate current metrics systems demonstrating student interaction with career departments; analyze results, including productivity, volume, and outcomes. Use information to create short-and long-term priorities for each department.
Work with Assistant Deans of career offices to develop strategy to evaluate and provide ongoing information to students, faculty and staff regarding careers and careers placement, including data and objectives. Assist Assistant Deans in measuring the needs of their constituencies.
Work with the Chief of Staff of the Law Center to ensure that the short- and longer-term priorities and programs of the career offices are aligned with the Dean's short- and longer-term priorities.
Conduct big-picture equity analysis of career services at the Law Center and support Assistant Deans in doing the same within each office. This includes addressing equity in career office hiring, staffing and promoting processes; employer recruitment and hiring processes; and delivery of services to students.
Ensure that Law Center leaders understand implications of their actions, decisions, and strategy on student employment outcomes. Intervene when needed.
Internal and External Reporting
In conjunction with the Assistant Deans of OCS and OPICS, create and present a comprehensive annual JD employment report to the Dean and other Associate Deans in April of each year.
In conjunction with the Assistant Dean of OGC, create and present an annual program-by-program LLM employment report to the Dean and Associate Dean for International and Graduate Programs in December of each year.
Oversee annual reporting of employment data to the ABA, U.S. News and World Report, and other reporting entities.
Serve as point person for employment data on Law Center's U.S. News and World Report and ABA SWOT team.
Identify and lead external advocacy efforts with U.S. News and World Report, ABA, and other reporting entities.
As needed, present data for all three offices within and outside the Law Center and field questions about data.
As needed, speak with journalists regarding career issues, representing the three offices and the Law Center.
Management and Supervision
Directly manage the Assistant Dean for Career Strategy, the Assistant Dean for Public Interest and Community Service, and the Assistant Dean for Graduate Careers.
Help identify areas for inter-office collaboration, synergies, efficiencies, coordination, and innovation. Move initiatives forward.
Ensure that initiatives reflect the unique contributions of each of the three career offices, differences in opportunities developed and populations served, and distinct contributions to the Law Center's overall mission.
Provide high-level support to career offices as needed, especially as related to investment direction; difficult student, employer, or staff problems; and any appeals of decisions made by office leaders.
Work with Assistant Deans continuously to implement equity plans in recruiting, staff development, and student services.
Help office leaders assess when to engage the Dean in their programs (i.e., to give opening remarks) and, where it is not possible or appropriate to engage the Dean, serve as the Dean's representative as appropriate.
Communicate with General Counsel of the University on behalf of three departments regarding meta-issues, such as FERPA and reports of discrimination by employers.
Collaborate with the academic Associate Deans and the Dean of Students as appropriate to maximize success for all students in the job market.
Collaborate with the Associate Dean of the Office of Graduate Programs as appropriate to maximize career services to LL.M. and other graduate students.
Evaluate and report regularly on career-related program expenditures for OCS, OPICS and OGC, including staffing and operations. Make recommendations to the Dean on long-term and medium-term budgetary priorities across the three career offices.
In conjunction with the Assistant Deans of each office, create annual budget priorities.
Job Development Outreach
In cooperation with the other Associate Deans, develop and execute a plan for faculty support for career-related objectives. Engage faculty in the work of the careers departments to maximize opportunities for students.
Work with the Office of Development to help create funding for postgraduate and summer fellowships and other student career support programs.
Collaborate with the Alumni Office to help develop new career and pro bono opportunities for our students and alumni.
Support the outreach efforts of all three offices by meeting with employers, alumni and faculty when needed.
Present to Law Center and University boards on the career offices' activities and initiatives, and build relationships to aid in job and externship creation.
Promote both traditional legal and non-traditional career opportunities.
Bar Task Force Leadership
Serve as head of the Bar Task Force, coordinating representatives from different offices across the Law Center that work with students regarding bar exam issues and information. In collaboration with the Bar Task Force, develop initiatives to support bar passage.
Advocate externally to bar licensing jurisdictions in support of students and new graduates as bar admission and bar exam issues emerge.
Identify bar-related issues that students and new graduates may not be aware of and work with members of the Bar Task Force to communicate information to students and new graduates.
Significant experience (10 years+) in career services, including directing a career service office and working with a variety of student populations
Experience in employer outreach, budget creation and analysis, and long-range planning. Demonstrated experience in job creation for students in the public and private sectors
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Strong knowledge of ABA's rules governing employment data
Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse groups of students, staff, alumni, employers, faculty, administrators, and other members of the legal community
