Position: Pro Bono Coordinator
Term: This position is currently for one year.
Location: This position can be remote or work out of TLC’s offices in Oakland, Brooklyn, San Diego, or Tijuana.
Reports to: Border Project Pro Bono Coordinator
Status: Full time, Exempt, (Temporary, 1 year)

Border Butterflies (BB) is a project anchored by Transgender Law Center, Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement, Black LGBT+ Migrant Project, and other Tijuana based organizations. The project aims to support LGBTQ asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border with legal, humanitarian, post-detention, and organizing support. The pro-bono coordinator position, based in the Tijuana/San Diego region, will be hosted by Transgender Law Center. The pro bono coordinator will build relationships with pro bono attorneys, help develop asylum cases and provide some direct legal support to LGBTQ asylum seekers in living in the United States.
Transgender Law Center (TLC) is the largest national trans-led organization advocating self-determination for all people. Grounded in legal expertise and committed to racial justice, TLC employs a variety of community-driven strategies to keep transgender and gender nonconforming people alive, thriving, and fighting for liberation.
Specific responsibilities of the Pro Bono Coordinator include:
- Develop a network of pro-bono attorneys including a plan for outreach, mentoring and training.
- Develop and implement a plan to place BBP asylum cases with pro bono attorney.
- Attend, participate in, and convene meetings and events to develop, sustain and strengthen new and existing coalitions and collaborations with legal and social service providers, immigrant advocacy organizations, victim support agencies, and government agencies.
- Develop innovative training materials including practice guides, templates, and webinars on asylum, removal defense and other relevant topics.
- Provide limited direct immigration representation to LGBTQ asylum seekers which includes but is not limited to drafting applications, affidavits and briefs, representation in court, and support for other aspects of legal cases.
- Support the work of the legal team and the organization generally.
- Perform other duties as assign including administrative/clerical tasks, as needed.
The position is full-time and may include travel and occasional work at night and on weekends.

Required Qualifications:
- Experience practicing immigration law, specifically representation of asylum seekers in immigration court.
- Fluency in Spanish and English.
- Experience with legal or policy advocacy relating to immigration.
- Familiarity with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender-nonconforming communities.
- Experience working with communities of color.
- Deep understanding of intersecting oppressions including anti-Blackness, white supremacy, transphobia, ableism, misogyny, colonialism, and capitalism.
- Strong writing, editing, and legal research skills and experience with public speaking.
- Skill at working collaboratively both within the organization and with other groups.
- Strong personal organization and time management skills.
- Creativity and good judgment.
- Demonstrated ability to triage and manage multiple tasks under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated capacity to provide a welcoming presence to clients experiencing trauma, and a demonstrated client-centered, trauma-informed perspective and cultural responsivity to the diverse populations we serve.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends is required.
- Willingness to travel and to work long hours when necessary.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience working with, outreaching to, and supporting pro-bono attorneys and volunteers.
- J.D. or other advanced legal training.
- Project management experience.
- Experience working with immigrants in immigration detention.
