The Director, Business Development – Corporate/Tax is responsible for leading the development and execution of strategically focused business initiatives to secure new clients and strengthen existing relationships, consistent with the overall goals and strategies of the Firm.
Working across all Corporate and Tax practice areas and collaborating with the broader BD and Communications teams, the Corporate/Tax BD Director will oversee all efforts to ensure that the group provides the highest quality work product to the partnership and avails them of all appropriate resources/content for client development and brand building across all practice areas, including the execution of individual Partner/Counsel and to individual business plans.
Primary Responsibilities and/or Essential Functions:
- Lead the team’s business development initiatives to align with the practice groups’ business plan objectives.
- Meet with Corporate/Tax Partners to execute on any requests regarding Bus Dev. efforts (pitches, RFPs, thought leadership and brand-building opportunities). Help develop content and determine the most effective approach for client presentations.
- Oversee all corporate pitches and RFPs; make sure deal list data is current and accurate; track corporate deals; clean up existing templates.
- Ensure that the tools and processes that go into the preparation of materials for pitches and RFPs are meeting expectations. Advise Partners on successful pitch strategies and handle post mortem reviews to improve processes.
- Team with functional specialists within Business Development, Communications and Marketing – including CRM, digital programs, communications, events, and creative services – in the coordination/execution of client development materials, thought leadership and other initiatives.
- Oversee deal reporting and tracking systems – as well as all ensuring the updating of all marketing and BD materials stemming from new deal/client announcements.
- Oversight and professional development of the Corporate/Tax BD team.
- Identify strategies and opportunities for expanding client relationships among practice groups by monitoring and reporting trends and issues impacting selection of external counsel.
- Track activities of competitors to identify new, effective and innovative business development techniques and enterprise strategies
- Working with Partners, and in some instances counsel, on their individual business plans in terms of both development and execution
- Oversight, with collaboration of Communications team, on all legal guide directory submissions and awards/profile-raising opportunities for individual Partners as well as for the various Corporate/Tax practice areas.
- Strategically develop and leverage the Firm’s client base through researching, analyzing and developing/examining potential or current client issues and creative data-rich profiles
- Any additional responsibilities as required by management.
Knowledge, Skills & Ability:
- 10+ years of marketing/BD-related experience in the areas of private equity and/or M&A; doing pitches and multi-tier marketing for new business initiatives in a professional services organization, preferably in a law firm.
- Top 100 law firm and/or investment banking experience
- Ability to work with, and instill confidence in, Senior Partners with regard to business development and other client/profile-raising opportunities.
- Strong writing, presentation and organizational skills.
- Drive and enthusiasm to work and complete assignments under tight scheduling deadlines in a team-oriented environment
- Demonstrated customer service focus and team-first orientation
- Ability to respond quickly under tight deadline pressure
- Proven creativity, conceptual skills development and resourcefulness, as well as demonstrated experience effecting organizational initiatives and vision
- Excellent consultative and consensus-building skills in working with Partners and Senior attorneys
- Organizational and political savvy in working within a large professional services organization.
- Ability to negotiate individual, group and Firm-wide needs and to interface successfully with multiple levels of business development team (Partners, Associates, legal support staff and other marketing staff).
- Strong management and people development skills couple with ability to work collaboratively with the Firm’s entire BD/Communications teams as well as across adjacent administrative areas (in particular Recruiting, DEI, CSR and Professional Development).
