Established in 1865, The George Washington University Law School is the oldest law school in Washington, DC. The school is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a charter member of the Association of American Law Schools. The law school is located on the GW campus in the downtown neighborhood familiarly known as Foggy Bottom. The Senior Student Program Associate, Law School Student Affairs will be responsible for developing and implementing programs that focus on Wellness and Disability. The incumbent will connect students with community resources, and engages in logistical support of wellness, inclusion, and disability support activities that serve to educate and cultivate the community at the School. This position maintains frequent contact with faculty, administrators, and other University offices about student concerns, illnesses, or emergencies to coordinate appropriate support. This position reports to and collaborates closely with the Associate Dean of Students and other members of that office, staff, and faculty at the School and other University offices.
Responsibilities include:
Collaborates within the Dean of Students Office regarding wellness programming, projects, and initiatives, including planning and executing student Wellness Week each semester as well as developing programming throughout the semester for Wellness or Cultural Competency credits for the Inns of Court program at GW Law. Collaborates with the Student Bar Association Student Affairs branch on wellness programming and initiatives to organize events designed to foster a sense of community, including working with student organizations on events designed to promote wellness, and inclusion, and to support students with disabilities.
Develops wellness-related programming that ensures student awareness of recourses including Colonial Health Center, Disability Support Services, University Student Affairs, and the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement. Monitors trends in legal education to ensure programs meet the needs of the law school population.
Provides personal advising for students, including working with students who are undergoing a personal crisis and/or who seek guidance managing the stress associated with law school transition, workload, and career paths. Aids, individual mentoring, mentoring programs, and support to both individual students and student organizations with a focus on those with particular wellness challenges or disabilities. Acts as subject matter expert for student wellness, accessibility, and inclusion on law campus;
Works with colleagues across the law school and university to facilitate outreach, intervention, and care plans for students experiencing a crisis or distress that may be impacting their social, personal, or academic performance. Coordinates with students returning from a leave of absence, in need of reduced course loads, or other wellness-related interventions.
Serves as a point of contact to investigate and respond appropriately to the needs of students whom faculty, staff, or other students refer for support;
Coordinates efforts within the Dean of Students to ensure students of concern are connected with appropriate university recourses as well as coordinating follow-up with this cohort.
Supports the Disability Support Services function headed by the Program Manager for Disability Services by assisting with day-to-day administrative operations for the accurate and efficient implementation of disability-related academic accommodations. Helps to onboard newly-registered students to determine how to best facilitate approved ADA accommodations. Coordinates with the University Disability Support Services Office to decide on accommodations, e.g., alternate text materials, accessible furniture for in-class and exam settings, assistive AV technology, and facility needs. Coordinates with the Law School Records Office on matters related to exam accommodations. Works with Associate Director for Student Academic Development to assist students in applying for accommodations for the bar exam;
Provides academic counseling and advising regarding registration, course selection, requirements for graduation, GW Law Bulletin compliance, co-curricular activities, and other issues as necessary. Participates in the 1L Inns of Court program as an Inn advisor, which includes occasionally presenting programming at Inns sessions.
Participates in orientation, the end-of-year academic awards ceremony, and commencement ceremonies.
