The Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism seeks a full-time Instructional Design Manager to support its mission of promoting civility, ethics, diversity, equity, and well-being in Illinois’ legal and judicial systems. The Instructional Design Manager will assist the Commission in designing and developing high-quality in-person and online continuing legal and judicial education courses for Illinois lawyers and judges. The Instructional Design Manager will also be responsible for expanding the Commission’s role as a thought leader in professional responsibility continuing legal education (CLE), helping the Commission develop other innovative educational initiatives, engaging with Illinois CLE providers to promote educational best practices, and collaborating with Commission stakeholders (including Illinois court entities) to advance the Commission’s mission.
Duties and Responsibilities
Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Supporting Commission staff in the ideation, design, development, and delivery of engaging and compelling professional responsibility (PR) CLE eCourses and courses to be delivered live (in-person or virtually).
- Communicating with Commission staff and subject matter experts regarding learning needs and presenting educational and curricular proposals to Commission management to address such needs.
- Serving as the lead in the CLE course design and development processes, seeking feedback from Commission management at key decision points, and coordinating with third-party vendors when appropriate.
- Developing visually appealing and engaging exercises, materials/media, and activities to enhance Commission programming (video, graphics, PowerPoint presentations, polls, simulations, role-plays, etc.).
- Developing mechanisms for measuring post-instruction outcomes and recommending curricular improvements based on key metrics.
- Maintaining project documentation and course folders.
- Ensuring the Commission’s CLE courses comply with the guidelines developed by the Illinois Supreme Court, Minimum Continuing Legal Education Board, and Commission.
- Serving as the Commission’s subject matter expert in areas of adult education, training, and course development, occasionally authoring articles for the Commission’s blog, posting relevant content on social media, and presenting at professional development events.
- Engaging with Illinois CLE providers to promote educational best practices and innovation in the design and facilitation of PR CLE courses by convening meetings of providers to discuss professional development trends and ways the Commission can be a resource; writing a quarterly e-newsletter for CLE providers regarding PR CLE best practices, trends, and tips; and consulting with individual providers from time-to-time on improving specific courses.
- Leading the Commission in onboarding and administering a Learning Management System (LMS).
- Supporting the Commission’s other educational initiatives (including the annual Future Is Now: Legal Services conference, Courthouse Professionalism Training, and training for law students) by recommending best practices for adult learners and helping to execute such initiatives.
- Occasionally assisting the Commission’s CLE & Accounting Manager with approval of CLE courses and reporting of CLE course completions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor’s Degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or a related field.
- 5+ years of relevant work experience in instructional design for adult learners.
- Experience in or familiarity with the legal profession/judiciary is strongly preferred.
- Experience designing curriculum focused on any of the Commission’s key subject areas is strongly preferred (professionalism, ethics, civility, diversity, and mental health/substance abuse).
- Must demonstrate professionalism in all interactions and communications and be committed to doing so with Commission stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to deadlines and details.
- Demonstrated success in managing multiple projects simultaneously and executing tasks with little supervision.
- Ability to function effectively and efficiently within a highly collaborative team.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze data and derive recommendations for improvement based on such data.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey information in a tactful, discrete, and diplomatic manner.
- Experience filming and editing video.
- Experience administering a Learning Management System (e.g., TalentLMS).
- Strong graphic design skills (e.g., Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Creative Cloud).
- Experience with educational design software (e.g., Articulate).
- Basic knowledge of HTML and WordPress.
- Proficient in the use of computer software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams.
